Afghanistan is one of the richest mining regions of the world, with untapped resources valued at approximately $3 trillion. Rare earth elements essential to lithium batteries, computer chips, and other technologies have attracted geopolitical competition that will only intensify. Surprisingly, for more than 20 years, US had control over these resources and nothing had been spent on Afghanistan Nation Building.
