Palestinian Surgeon Detained by Germany En Route to Conference on Gaza Health Crisis

German authorities have detained Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu Sittah, preventing him from attending a Palestinian conference in Berlin where he was invited to speak about his work in Gaza hospitals.

Abu Sittah announced his detention on social media, stating he was held at a Berlin airport and barred from attending 'The Palestine Conference: We will put you on trial,' despite over 800 tickets being sold for the event.

While German police restricted attendance to only 250 people, Abu Sittah condemned the act as an attempt to silence a witness to genocide, adding to Germany's complicity in the ongoing massacre. He referred to a legal case against Germany over its arms supplies to Israel.

A British citizen as well, Abu Sittah returned to Gaza when Israel began its intense bombardment of the territory in October. He has become a prominent figure highlighting the severe medical shortages faced by Gaza's hospitals.

Describing the challenges, Abu Sittah revealed that doctors had to use vinegar and other household items for surgeries. After over six months of relentless Israeli attacks, including a ground offensive and blockade on essential supplies, Gaza has become nearly uninhabitable, lacking basic necessities and medical services.

Since October 7, Israeli assaults have resulted in the deaths of at least 33,634 Palestinians and injuries to 76,214 more, predominantly women and children.
