The Israeli military has killed dozens of people, including children, after bombing a school-turned-shelter in the war-torn Gaza Strip. The attack targeted a UN-run school in the Nuseirat refugee camp on Thursday, resulting in at least 40 deaths, including five children, and numerous injuries.
Ismail al-Thawabta, director of the government media office in Gaza, indicated that the death toll might rise due to the severity of the injuries. The strike came amid Israel’s renewed air and ground operations in central Gaza.
The Israeli military confirmed hitting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) school, alleging it was used by Hamas fighters. Al-Thawabta refuted this, accusing Israel of fabricating stories to justify the attack on displaced civilians.
The incident occurred hours after another Israeli assault on the Maghazi refugee camp, which also caused significant casualties. According to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), Israeli airstrikes since Tuesday have killed at least 70 people and injured over 300 in central Gaza.
Since October 7, 2023, Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of over 36,500 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. This conflict follows Hamas's Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, which was launched in response to intensified Israeli actions. Israel has imposed a severe blockade on Gaza, cutting off essential supplies to the region's over two million residents.
