WASHINGTON, D.C. – As diplomatic efforts intensify to end the ongoing war between the US and Iran, US Vice President JD Vance has departed for Islamabad. He is scheduled to join a critical round of talks with Iranian officials on Saturday.
Escalation in Lebanon
Ahead of the negotiations, Israel has dramatically escalated its military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. A massive wave of Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday killed at least 300 people and injured more than 1,150 others nationwide. Calls are mounting to expand the US-Iran ceasefire agreement to include Israel’s northern front.
Humanitarian Concerns
The Lebanese health system is struggling to cope with the rising casualties. The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has urged Israel to withdraw a forced evacuation order affecting two major hospitals in the Beirut area.
Conflicting Signals on Diplomacy
While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued instructions to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon, Israeli media reports quote the defense minister stating that “the war will not be stopped.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that if Washington continues to allow Prime Minister Netanyahu to “kill diplomacy” by violating the ceasefire, it would be a “dumb” choice, though Iran remains prepared for all outcomes.
