Iran Strongly Condemns Israeli Assassination of Senior Military Advisor in Syria

Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has issued a vehement condemnation in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the president of the UN Security Council. The letter addresses the recent assassination of Brigadier General Seyyed Razi Mousavi, a senior commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), in a missile attack by the Israeli regime on the Sayyeda Zeinab neighborhood of Damascus, Syria.

Iravani underscored Iran's legitimate and inherent right, under international law and the United Nations Charter, to respond decisively at an appropriate time deemed necessary. Brigadier General Mousavi was serving as part of Iran's military advisory mission in Syria, contributing to the successful counterterrorism efforts against Daesh.

Describing the assassination as a "heinous and cowardly act of terrorism," Iravani emphasized that Iranian military advisors are legally present in Syria at the formal request of the Syrian Arab Republic, supporting the fight against terrorism. He highlighted that this attack marked the second assault on Iranian advisors by the Israeli regime this month, following a similar incident on December 2.

Iravani called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its charter obligation in maintaining international peace and security. He urged the council to strongly condemn the Israeli regime's malevolent activities, acts of aggression, and terrorism in the region, emphasizing that such actions pose a serious threat to global peace and security. Iravani concluded by urging the international community to compel the Israeli regime to comply with international law and abandon its destabilizing activities in the region.
