Syria Condemns Israeli Assassination of Iranian Military Advisor, Urges UN Action

Syria has strongly condemned Israel's targeted killing of a senior member of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Sayyed Razi Mousavi, who was serving as a military advisor in Damascus at the official invitation of the Syrian government. In letters to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the international community to take responsibility for ending Israel's aggressive policies that pose a threat to global peace and security.

The ministry urged the UN to take decisive action against Israel's recent aggression near the Sayyida Zeinab area in the countryside of Damascus on December 25. The attack, carried out by Israeli forces from the occupied Syrian Golan, resulted in the martyrdom of Sayyed Razi Mousavi, violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, according to Syria.

Mousavi, a seasoned military advisor and IRGC commander responsible for the Syrian file, had been providing logistical support to the axis of resistance in Syria. His assassination follows a pattern of targeted attacks on Iranian officials, reminiscent of the killing of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.

Iran's ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, reported that three missiles struck his home near Damascus shortly after his return from the Iranian embassy. Stressing that Mousavi held a diplomatic passport and residence, Akbari argued that the assassination constitutes a blatant crime under international conventions.

Iran maintains an advisory mission in Syria at the request of Damascus to combat foreign-backed terrorists. The Syrian government accuses Israel and the US of collaborating with groups like Daesh, conducting frequent attacks on forces aligned with the Syrian government and its allies.
