House Resolution Calls for Dropping Charges Against Julian Assange, Citing First Amendment Protections

Last month, a resolution was introduced in the House urging the United States to dismiss charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The resolution, presented by Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), asserts that regular journalistic activities, including the acquisition and dissemination of information, are protected under the First Amendment. The bill advocates for the abandonment of all charges and extradition attempts against Assange, who faces a potential sentence of up to 175 years in prison if convicted for journalism exposing US war crimes.

Currently held in London's Belmarsh Prison since 2019, Assange's upcoming hearing at the UK High Court on February 20 and 21 holds significant implications for his potential extradition to the US. This hearing is widely regarded as his final opportunity to appeal the extradition. In anticipation of these crucial proceedings, supporters of WikiLeaks and Assange are mobilizing, calling on Americans to contact their House representatives and encourage them to endorse Rep. Gosar's resolution.
