American Rabbis Disrupt UN Assembly, Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

Dozens of American rabbis made a disruptive appearance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, urging Washington to refrain from obstructing an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Carrying banners that read "Biden: The World Says Ceasefire," the rabbis called on the US president to "stop vetoing peace."

After being escorted out by security, they held a press conference outside the UN. Rabbi Alyssa Wise expressed horror at the US government's role in hindering Israel's efforts to cease the bombing and starvation in Gaza. She emphasized the significance of the United Nations as a venue for diplomatic action to end violence.

Rabbi Abby Stein, a member of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, highlighted the UN's post-World War II creation to prevent atrocities, especially those against Jewish people. Another rabbi stated, "Our government refuses to represent this very popular demand. We came here directly to represent ourselves and our Jewish values."

The rabbis' action followed the US vetoing Russia's proposal to amend a Security Council resolution, including a call for a Gaza ceasefire. Russia's proposed amendment sought an "urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities," a move blocked by the US.

In response, Russia's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Anna Ustigneva, accused the US of playing a "cowardly game" by protecting Israel through its Security Council vetoes on December 22.
