Donald Trump defeats Nikki Haley in New Hampshire primary

Republican presidential candidate and former US President Donald Trump has gained victory in New Hampshire's Republican presidential contest, cruising by his only remaining rival, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Trump defeated Nikki Haley on Tuesday in the New Hampshire primary, his second consecutive victory in his bid to secure his party's presidential nomination for a November rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 US presidential election.

He lashed out at Haley for "taking a victory lap" despite her loss in New Hampshire's Republican presidential contest. "This is not your typical victory speech, but let's not have somebody take a victory when she had a very bad night," Trump said.

However, a large turnout by independent voters helped boost Haley's votes. The former South Carolina governor insisted that she would remain in the competition against Trump at least through the Super Tuesday primaries on March 5, adding that the race is far from over.

"New Hampshire is first in the nation. It is not the last in the nation," Haley said in a speech to her supporters Tuesday night.

"This race is far from over. There are dozens of states left to go, and the next one is my sweet state of South Carolina." On Saturday, she had questioned Trump's mental aptitude, claiming the former US president is not as "sharp” as he used to be.
