Iran Denounces US Airstrikes on Iraq and Syria at UN Security Council Meeting

Iran's condemnation of recent US airstrikes on Iraq and Syria as illegal and in violation of international law was strongly voiced by Iran's permanent ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani. Iravani made these remarks during a UN Security Council meeting addressing threats to international peace and security held on Monday.

The condemnation follows US military forces launching strikes on over 85 targets in Iraq and Syria overnight on Friday. These airstrikes, conducted over a span of 30 minutes, utilized more than 125 precision munitions. The US claims these strikes were in response to a drone attack that resulted in the deaths of several American soldiers at a remote base in Jordan.

Iravani emphasized that the US military action is deemed illegitimate, illegal, and unjustified, representing a clear breach of international law and the United Nations Charter. He particularly highlighted Paragraph 4 of Article 2 of the Charter, stating that such actions flagrantly violate the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence of Iraq and Syria.

Additionally, Iravani condemned the joint military actions of the United States and the United Kingdom against Yemen, labeling them as a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.

The Iranian ambassador pointed out that these unlawful strikes target civilians and vital infrastructure, posing a significant threat to regional and international peace and security.

Iravani also criticized the continued occupation of Syrian territory by the United States, along with their support of separatist and terrorist groups, exacerbating economic hardship and humanitarian crises in Syria.

Regarding resistance groups across the West Asia region, Iravani clarified that these groups act independently, motivated by their legitimate rights under international law. He refuted any attempt to attribute these actions to Iran or its Armed Forces as baseless and unacceptable.

Iravani attributed the root causes of the region's current situation to occupation, aggression, and the ongoing genocide and atrocities committed by the Israeli regime, with full support from the US, against innocent Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. He emphasized the necessity of ending the conflict by stopping the genocide in Gaza, establishing an immediate ceasefire, ending the presence of US forces in Iraq and Syria, and pressuring the Israeli regime to end the occupation of Palestinian territories.
