Iran Urges Impartiality in IAEA Reports on Nuclear Activities

Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Vienna has emphasized the need for impartiality in reports conducted by the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, regarding Iran's nuclear activities.

In an explanatory note dated March 5, 2024, submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency and released to the media on Tuesday, Iran called on the IAEA to adhere to principles of impartiality, professionalism, and objectivity in its reporting. This response was prompted by reports submitted to the IAEA Board of Governors on February 24 by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, which addressed verification and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities and the Non-Proliferation Treaty Safeguards Agreement with Tehran.

Iran affirmed its full compliance with obligations, including the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, and stressed its cooperation with the IAEA for effective verification activities. Criticism was also directed at Grossi for not properly separating issues in the reports, particularly concerning matters related to the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers (JCPOA) versus NPT Safeguards.

Additionally, Iran's UN mission in Vienna highlighted the cessation of voluntary transparency in its nuclear activities following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in May 2018 and the subsequent failure of European parties to fulfill their commitments under the agreement. Iran justified its decision to cease certain commitments as fully in accordance with its rights under the JCPOA.

Overall, the note serves as a reminder of Iran's expectation for fair and unbiased treatment in the IAEA's reporting on its nuclear program.
