Senator Elizabeth Warren Suggests Israel's Actions in Gaza May Constitute Genocide

Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts made remarks suggesting that international officials could determine Israel's assault on Gaza as legally constituting genocide during an event at a local mosque last week.

Speaking at the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland, Massachusetts, Senator Warren stated, "If you want to do it as an application of law, I believe that they’ll find that it is genocide, and they have ample evidence to do so." A video of her comments began circulating, with Warren's office confirming her remarks to POLITICO.

Warren addressed a question about a ruling from the International Court of Justice regarding Israel's actions in Gaza and shared her perspective on the matter. Her spokesperson clarified that Warren commented on the ongoing legal process at the International Court of Justice, not explicitly sharing her views on whether genocide is occurring in Gaza.

The senator has faced pressure from progressive groups since the onset of the crisis in Gaza. Initially expressing support for Israel following Hamas' attack, Warren's stance evolved as criticism mounted over Israel's military response. She has become increasingly vocal in her criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration, suggesting restrictions on military aid to Israel and calling for action from Congress in response to Israeli actions that violate humanitarian laws.

During her appearance at the mosque, Warren emphasized the importance of condemning Israel's actions in Gaza, stating, "For me, it is far more important to say what Israel is doing is wrong. And it is wrong." She highlighted concerns such as starving children within civilian populations and conducting airstrikes in densely populated areas.
