Iran Reaffirms Commitment to Non-Proliferation while Regional Tensions

Iran remains steadfast in its commitment to international treaties prohibiting weapons of mass destruction, maintaining an unchanged nuclear doctrine, according to Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani. Speaking at a weekly press conference in Tehran, Kan'ani emphasized that Iran’s stance is guided by a fatwa issued by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, which bans such arms.

Kan'ani highlighted Iran’s belief that weapons of mass destruction pose a significant threat to the international community. He criticized Israel, referring to it as the "Zionist regime," for being the only entity in West Asia not to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Israel is estimated to possess 200 to 400 nuclear warheads, making it the sole possessor of such arms in the region.

Regarding the recent visit of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi to Iran, Kan'ani expressed hope that the agency would maintain impartiality to foster constructive interaction. He noted that issues have been resolved when the IAEA adopted a technical approach, but talks have faltered when political stances were taken. Grossi's visit was described as a "good opportunity" for continuing negotiations on unresolved issues.

Kan'ani also reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering support for Palestine, condemning Israel's actions in Gaza. He announced that Iran has implemented various political, technical, and legal measures to support Palestine and is preparing to open a virtual embassy of Palestine.

Additionally, Kan'ani emphasized that regional security is vital for lasting economic cooperation. Iran has initiated joint mechanisms with neighboring and Arab countries in the Persian Gulf to strengthen multilateral cooperation. He underscored that security is a common priority and a foundation for durable economic partnerships.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian reiterated that full peace and security in West Asia hinge on the disarmament of Israel and the end of its occupation of Palestine, reaffirming Iran's commitment to fostering regional understanding and cooperation.
