Interim Iranian President Calls for Stronger Iran-Saudi Relations

Interim Iranian President Mohammad Mokhber emphasized the urgent need to strengthen relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia in a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The conversation took place on Friday as the Crown Prince extended his condolences following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and their companions in East Azarbaijan.

Mokhber highlighted the importance of Iran-Saudi relations for the Muslim world, stating, "Despite some powers' opposition, our relations have reached a good level and the region is in desperate need of such relations." He called for increased economic exchanges and the removal of obstacles to further improve political relations between the two nations.

He reassured that the loss of President Raeisi, though painful, would not alter Iran's diplomatic course, and that Tehran and Riyadh would continue to foster cordial relations. Mokhber stressed the importance of regional cooperation and neighborliness to ensure stability and prosperity.

The interim president also expressed gratitude for the messages of sympathy from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the Crown Prince, and appreciated the participation of Saudi Arabia's foreign minister in the tribute ceremonies for the late president and his entourage.

Crown Prince Salman reiterated the significance of Iran and Saudi Arabia in the region and the Muslim world, expressing optimism that improved relations would lead to a brighter future. He confirmed Riyadh's readiness to enhance economic cooperation with Tehran and emphasized the need to continue President Raeisi's efforts to develop mutual and regional ties.

The tragic helicopter crash, which occurred in March 2023 during President Raeisi's tenure, when Iran and Saudi Arabia restored diplomatic relations after seven years, has deeply affected the nation and garnered widespread support and solidarity globally. In response, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
