Iran has strongly condemned a recent statement by the UK, France, and Germany regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, calling the accusations absurd and baseless.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry criticized the statement on Sunday, asserting that it lacks credibility. “As it has been announced time and again, Iran's nuclear program has a completely peaceful nature and nuclear weapons have no place in Iran's military and defense doctrine,” the ministry stated.
The ministry further noted the irony in the accusations from countries that have taken a political and unconstructive approach towards Iran's nuclear program and are responsible for the current state of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). These nations are now accusing Iran of undermining the agreement.
The JCPOA, signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany), required Iran to scale back its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, the US, under former President Donald Trump, withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reimposed severe sanctions on Iran, despite Tehran's adherence to its commitments for a year after the US exit.
In response to the European statement, Iran reiterated its commitment to constructive interaction and technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), within the framework of its rights and obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Safeguards Agreement.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Iran remains ready for constructive dialogue and interaction. The ministry called for goodwill, avoidance of futile political measures, and a serious, pragmatic approach from all parties to address the issues at hand.
