Iran’s acting President Mohammad Mokhber announced that a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and Russia for the potential transfer of Russian gas to Iran will benefit the entire region. Mokhber discussed the agreement during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.
“[Potential] implementation of the plan for transfer of Russia’s gas to Iran would serve not only the two countries’ economic interests but also the interests of the entire region,” Mokhber stated.
The MoU was signed earlier in the day by Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji and Alexey Miller, the CEO of Russia’s energy giant Gazprom. This agreement is expected to facilitate the import of Russian gas to Iran, which could then supply gas to Iraq, Turkey, and Pakistan.
Mokhber emphasized that the signing of the MoU is a significant step towards regional economic development and deepening Russo-Iranian relations. He praised the unchangeable nature of the bilateral ties and the shared perspectives on regional issues, expressing optimism for enhanced regional stability.
President Putin echoed Mokhber's sentiments, highlighting the MoU as a positive development for regional and international markets. He noted that Iran has demonstrated its commitment to turning cooperation from paper to practical implementation. Putin commended the previous efforts of former Iranian president Ebrahim Raeisi's administration in expanding and implementing bilateral agreements and wished Iran success in its upcoming snap presidential election.
