Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, has voiced concern over the international community's neglect of Afghanistan due to ongoing conflicts elsewhere. Speaking at the Organisation of Turkic States meeting in Azerbaijan, Mirziyoyev highlighted the urgent need to address the situation in Afghanistan, a country destabilized by prolonged conflicts, including the U.S. invasion and subsequent withdrawal.
Mirziyoyev urged for the release of Afghanistan's frozen assets to aid in the country's recovery. He stressed that millions of Turkic people in Afghanistan have been overlooked as global attention shifts to other regions of conflict. The Organisation of Turkic States, which includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan, discussed a unified approach to support Afghanistan.
Despite not recognizing the Taliban, Uzbekistan maintains relatively close relations with the group and continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. Mirziyoyev's call for a coordinated effort among Turkic states aims to stabilize Afghanistan and address the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by years of war and neglect.
