Missile Attack Targets US Military Facility in Eastern Syria

An illegal military facility housing US occupation forces in Syria’s eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr has reportedly come under a fresh missile attack from nearby areas amid growing anti-US sentiments over Washington’s support for the Israeli onslaught on Gaza.

Lebanon’s Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network, citing local sources, reported that several explosions were heard near the US-controlled Conoco gas field early on Sunday after multiple projectiles struck the site. There were no immediate reports about possible casualties or the extent of damage at the installation.

Following the missile attack, US military aircraft and helicopters flew over the eastern side of Dayr al-Zawr province and the base area, launching several flares in the sky over the Conoco gas field.

This missile strike is the third of its kind in 24 hours, with two previous attacks occurring early on Saturday. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, usually claims responsibility for most retaliatory strikes on US military bases in Iraq and Syria. These attacks are declared as acts of solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s war against Gaza, which has resulted in over 39,258 Palestinian deaths and more than 90,589 injuries, predominantly among women and children.

The conflict escalated after Israel launched an offensive on Gaza on October 7, 2023, following a surprise attack by Hamas-led resistance groups. Despite over nine months of fighting, Israel has not achieved its objectives in Gaza. The US, Israel’s most important ally, has provided significant military and intelligence support during the Gaza war and has blocked UN resolutions calling for a humanitarian ceasefire.
