More than 100 Palestinians lost their lives after Israeli airstrikes targeted a school sheltering displaced individuals in the eastern Gaza Strip. The attack, which occurred in the al-Tabi’in school located in the al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City, took place on Saturday morning as worshippers were performing the dawn prayer.
Palestine’s WAFA news agency reported that the Israeli occupation forces struck the school, resulting in over 100 fatalities and leaving dozens injured. Local sources revealed that the airstrikes hit during the Fajr (dawn) prayers, leading to a rapid increase in casualties.
The Gaza government’s media office condemned the attack as a "crime of genocide and ethnic cleansing," highlighting the difficulty faced by medical and emergency teams in retrieving the bodies due to the scale of the massacre.
The media office called on the international community and UN organizations to take action against the ongoing genocide and bloodshed, urging them to hold Israel and its allies, particularly the US, accountable for the ongoing violence.
In a statement, the Israeli occupation army confirmed the strike, claiming that the school was being used as a hideout by Hamas commanders. This attack is part of Israel’s broader military campaign in Gaza, which began after Operation al-Aqsa Storm in October last year. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of nearly 40,000 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children, and has left over 91,000 injured.
Israel continues to impose a severe blockade on Gaza, restricting access to essential supplies such as food, medicine, electricity, and water.
