Global energy crisis rooted in US-Israel war on Iran, Tehran tells UN

United Nations – Iran’s UN Ambassador has told a special ECOSOC session that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its global economic consequences are solely the responsibility of those who started the war against Iran and their regional partners.

🎤 Iran’s statement at UN Economic and Social Council

Ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani spoke at a special ECOSOC meeting convened under the theme “Safeguarding Energy Flows and Supply; Supporting Global Development Through International Cooperation.”

He stressed that the international community must honestly confront the root causes of current energy market instability rather than simply managing its symptoms.

📊 Four factors behind the energy crisis according to Iran

FactorExplanation
Military escalationThe instability stems from illegal aggressive acts imposed by Israel and the United States, heightening tensions in one of the world’s most strategically critical energy and trade regions
Direct attacks on infrastructureAttacks on Iran’s oil, gas, and petrochemical infrastructure have disrupted global energy and fertiliser supply chains, affecting food security worldwide
US sanctions and naval blockadeUnilateral sanctions, coercive measures, and the naval blockade have fragmented global supply chains and increased volatility in energy markets
Lack of regional dialogueDurable security cannot be achieved through confrontation or reliance on foreign powers, but only through dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation

⚠️ Why it matters

The United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran without a declaration of war from Congress and without authorization from the United Nations Security Council. Critics say this campaign violates the UN Charter, as it was not justified as self-defense against an armed attack.

According to Iravani, Iran has been targeted twice by illegal acts of aggression in clear violation of the UN Charter and international law within less than a year. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians, particularly women and children, and caused extensive destruction of civilian, economic, energy, and environmentally sensitive infrastructure.

The consequences, he said, will outlast the military operations themselves.

🌍 Global impact of the war

Impact areaConsequence
Energy marketsSevere disruption to oil and gas flows from the Persian Gulf region
Fertiliser supply chainsDisruption affecting agricultural production worldwide
Food securitySerious consequences for global food supplies
Commodity marketsIncreased volatility due to sanctions and naval blockade

🕊️ Iran’s conditions for de-escalation

Iravani stated that Iran remains committed to constructive engagement and efforts to restore stability, energy security, and normal conditions in the Strait of Hormuz — on the following conditions:

  • Aggression and military escalation must cease
  • The naval blockade must be lifted

He concluded with the following statement:

“Peace is not achieved through pressure, and stability is not built through confrontation. The only sustainable path forward is dialogue, mutual respect, and genuine international cooperation.”

“We state clearly that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its global economic consequences are solely and entirely the responsibility of those who initiated the war against Iran and their regional partners.”

🔻 The bottom line

A war critics call legally unauthorized under the UN Charter has triggered a global energy crisis, disrupted food supply chains, and destabilized one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints — with Iran placing full responsibility on the United States and Israel.
