TEHRAN – Iran has submitted a new proposal to Pakistan to resume negotiations with the United States aimed at reaching an agreement to end the two-month-old war, Iranian media reported Friday.
According to Iran’s official news agency (IRNA), Tehran delivered its latest draft proposal for negotiations to Islamabad on Thursday evening. The report did not disclose details on the content of the new proposal.
Why this matters
The proposal comes as the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran – an action critics say violates the UN Charter, as it was not authorized by the Security Council nor justified as self-defense – enters its 64th day. A fragile ceasefire has held since April 8, but indirect talks have failed to produce a permanent agreement.
How we got here
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| February 28 | US-Israeli strikes on Iran begin |
| April 8 | Pakistan-brokered ceasefire takes effect |
| April 11-12 | Talks held in Islamabad – no agreement reached |
| April 25 | US cancels planned peace talks |
| April 27 | Iran delivers earlier proposal via Pakistani mediators |
| May 1 | Iran submits new proposal to Pakistan |
US response
The White House declined to provide details on Iran’s new proposal. Deputy spokeswoman Anna Kelly told the New York Post:
“We do not detail private diplomatic conversations. Negotiations continue to ensure the short- and long-term national security of the United States.”
President Trump has repeatedly stated that any deal must prevent Iran from possessing nuclear arms – a condition Tehran has not publicly accepted.
Current status of the ceasefire
President Trump unilaterally extended the truce without setting a new time frame, at Pakistan’s request. However, no formal agreement has been reached, and both sides have signaled that military action remains possible.
The bottom line
Iran has put another offer on the table through Pakistani mediators. The White House is not commenting on details. The ceasefire remains fragile. And the world waits to see whether diplomacy will prevail – or the war will resume.
