The post-9/11 warzones of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other areas have resulted in the deaths of over 7,000 U.S. service members, affecting a large community of loved ones. The human cost for Afghan, Iraqi, and other allied military and police deaths has been even greater. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of U.S. and allied service members have been wounded or died indirectly due to injuries sustained in combat. The military suicide rate has significantly increased since 2004, indicating a mental health crisis. Certain U.S. states and towns have experienced higher human costs due to the heavy recruitment of low-income and minority communities. Private contractors have also suffered casualties while providing support to U.S. troops, but their deaths are not thoroughly reported or compensated. Foreign workers for U.S. contracting firms often do not receive recognition or compensation for their deaths.
