Netherlands Bolsters NATO Mission in Iraq through Increased Troop Deployment

The Dutch government announced on Friday its decision to deploy approximately 120 additional soldiers and three Chinook transport helicopters to support the ongoing NATO alliance mission in Iraq. This deployment comes in addition to the infantry unit of approximately 145 soldiers that the Netherlands had previously committed to sending to Iraq starting from January 1, 2024.

NATO has emphasized that its non-combat mission in Iraq focuses on strengthening Iraqi security institutions and forces, with the overarching goals of preventing the resurgence of ISIS, combating terrorism, and contributing to the stabilization of the country.

The newly deployed Dutch unit will play a crucial role in supplying food and equipment to troops on the ground. Additionally, it will be involved in the transportation of military personnel and equipment, further enhancing the logistical capabilities of the mission.
