Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, dismissed the U.S. government's allegations in its recent report on countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD). Kanaani labeled the claims as baseless, highlighting Iran's commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and its comprehensive safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He reiterated Iran's stance against nuclear weapons, emphasizing that they have no place in the country's military and defense doctrine. Kanaani pointed out Iran's historical victimization by chemical weapons during the Iraq-Iran war, accusing Western states, including the U.S., of supporting Saddam Hussein. He argued that the U.S. lacks legitimacy in assessing commitments due to its non-compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention and Biological Weapons Convention, along with allegations of establishing "illegal labs" worldwide. The U.S. Defense Department's 2023 report acknowledged that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapons program at present but highlighted its capacity to produce fissile material rapidly.
