House Votes to Impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

In a historic move, the US Republican-controlled House of Representatives has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, marking the first time a cabinet member has faced such action in nearly 150 years. The vote, which occurred on Tuesday with a tally of 214 to 213, followed an initial failed impeachment attempt last week. Now, the Democratic-controlled Senate will consider the impeachment.

Mayorkas has come under scrutiny from the GOP for his handling of what he himself has termed a "crisis" on the US-Mexico border. He has urged Congress to provide the necessary tools and resources to address the situation.

Critics of Mayorkas accuse him of failing to uphold immigration laws, thereby exacerbating the immigration crisis. They argue that he has not fulfilled his duty to manage the influx of immigrants from the southern border.

Responding to these allegations, Mayorkas dismissed them as baseless, asserting that they do not distract him from his responsibilities.

US President Joe Biden condemned the House's impeachment vote, labeling it as an act of "blatant unconstitutional partisanship" and dismissing it as a "political stunt" on Tuesday.

Analysts speculate that the Senate is likely to reject the impeachment.
