Nicaragua Brings Case Against Germany to ICJ Over Alleged Support for Gaza Genocide

Nicaragua has filed a case against Germany before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Berlin of supporting "genocide" against the people of Palestine in Gaza by backing Israel. The case also includes Germany's suspension of funding for the UN Palestinian refugee agency.

The ICJ announced that hearings for both countries to present their submissions will take place on April 8 and 9. Nicaragua has requested the ICJ to swiftly take interim measures against Germany before the case undergoes further examination by judges.

The case follows the ICJ's January ruling that Israel must take immediate measures to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza and ensure the provision of aid.

Since the start of Israel's military offensive after Operation al-Aqsa Storm by Gaza-based resistance movements in October 2023, over 31,500 Palestinians, including women and children, have lost their lives. The offensive has devastated Gaza, with hospitals destroyed and half of its 2.4 million residents displaced.

The blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, depriving its population of fuel, electricity, sustenance, and water.

The ICJ's interim ruling in January ordered Israel to halt genocidal acts and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
