Senior US Official Resigns Over Israel's War on Gaza, Citing Personal Reasons

Andrew Miller, a senior US Department of State official and deputy assistant secretary for Israeli-Palestinian affairs, has resigned amid Israel's ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in over 37,400 Palestinian deaths in the past eight months. Miller cited personal reasons for his departure, as reported by The Washington Post.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller confirmed Miller's resignation, praising his deep experience and sharp perspective. Known as a staunch supporter of Palestinian rights and statehood, Andrew Miller advocated for the US to leverage its significant support for Israel, including military, economic, political, and diplomatic backing, to influence Israeli actions.

One US official described Miller as progressive regarding Israel-Palestine issues but pragmatic in his approach. Miller was instrumental in the executive order issued in February that imposed sanctions on several extremist Israeli settlers for attacking Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank.

Miller's resignation is notable for being the most senior official involved in Israeli-Palestinian policy to leave the Biden administration, following at least eight other resignations over US support for Israel's war in Gaza.

The conflict intensified after Palestinian resistance movements launched a surprise attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, on October 7. Israel's response has targeted hospitals, residences, and houses of worship in Gaza, drawing widespread condemnation.

President Joe Biden has vowed to maintain "ironclad" support for Israel despite the ongoing violence, a stance that has contributed to internal dissent and resignations within his administration.
