Iran Criticizes US Silence on Israeli Strike in Yemen Amid Rising Tensions

Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saied Iravani, criticized the United States for its silence regarding a recent Israeli strike on a Yemeni port held by a powerful militia. This criticism was expressed in a letter shared with Newsweek and addressed to U.N. leadership.

The letter came in response to comments made by U.S. alternative representative for political affairs, Robert Wood, during a U.N. Security Council meeting. Wood condemned a drone attack conducted by the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) on Tel Aviv, attributing it to Iranian backing. He stated, "The Houthis' July 19 drone strike in the heart of Tel Aviv using what appears to be an Iranian-made Samad-3 UAV is just another case of the Houthis flouting the demands of this Council to cease attacks and Iran violating the U.N. arms embargo."

Iravani responded by rejecting these allegations as "baseless" and accused the U.S. of diverting attention from the root causes of regional tensions while protecting Israel. He emphasized that many Security Council members highlighted Israel's actions in Gaza as the primary cause of the current situation and called for an end to what he described as "genocidal war" against the people of Gaza.

Iravani also expressed disappointment in the U.S., France, and the UK for their silence following Israel's retaliatory strike on Yemen's Hodeidah port, calling it "shameful and disappointing."
