A recent investigation by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has revealed that the Taliban may have diverted $239 million in U.S. aid intended for development projects in Afghanistan. The State Department’s Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) and International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) divisions reportedly failed to properly vet at least 29 grant recipients, raising the risk that funds were misappropriated by terrorists. The report highlights the need for stringent vetting to prevent aid from benefiting extremist groups.
