Former Afghan President Urges Reflection on National Interests in Candid Podcast: ‘We thought of ourselves as lions, but now seen as mice and cats’

In a recent podcast, the ex-president of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, encouraged a reflection on the nation's history and the prioritization of Afghanistan's interests over individual agendas. Employing sarcasm, Ghani remarked, "We used to think of ourselves as powerful like lions, but without Afghanistan, we're as small as a mouse and nobody cares about us, just like a flea."

Addressing what he calls a "malicious circle," Ghani called for a united strategy to break free from divisive political agendas. He asserted that the issue lies not with the Afghan people but with certain politicians and "ethnic brokers" who, he claims, are intent on dividing rather than uniting.

Ghani emphasized the need to acknowledge the pride tied to the land and called for a departure from the current state of affairs. He stressed that treating the Afghan people as mere sheep without considering their wishes would prove to be a grave mistake.

The former president alluded to his past rhetoric of comparing Afghanistan and its people to lions, especially in dealings with the Taliban. While not directly naming the Taliban, Ghani argued that Afghanistan cannot progress in isolation and underscored the importance of both people's support and continued international aid.

Addressing the nation, Ghani urged for a popular movement to instigate change and transform into a national discourse. He highlighted the critical role that unity and collaboration play in overcoming the challenges the country faces.

Ghani's departure from Afghanistan before the Taliban took control in August 2021 has led to criticism from those left behind. Additionally, he faces accusations of involvement in money extortion and embezzlement, further straining public opinion against him. Despite these challenges, Ghani continues to advocate for a united and progressive Afghanistan, calling for a shift in the nation's trajectory.
