During an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting, Russia's Permanent Representative, Vassily Nebenzia, criticized the Council's inaction regarding the recent Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria. Nebenzia highlighted Russia's earlier efforts to convene an emergency briefing on the Israeli strike in Damascus, emphasizing the need for accountability and compliance with UN Security Council resolutions.
Nebenzia condemned Israel's non-compliance with the Council's decisions, describing it as a "disrespectful" act towards the international community. He called for an immediate end to the ongoing violence and urged the international community to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, also weighed in on the issue, pointing out that Israel has never condemned Ukrainian strikes against Russian territories. Her remarks came in response to the Israeli Ambassador to Russia, Simon Halperin's, expectation for Russia to condemn Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel.
Zakharova questioned Israel's stance on the Ukrainian strikes, recalling Israel's past statements supporting Ukrainian actions. She emphasized the need for consistency and called for an end to the selective condemnation of attacks.
